The story behind "Captive"
For as long as I can remember, at least 6 years, a good friend and co-worker of mine has asked me to draw him a mermaid. Hoy has asked me religiously as if he had the question marked on his calendar as a reminder to ask me. He had specifics. Hoy said she had to be a blonde, and there had to be blue in the picture. He didn't say she had to be in her natural habitat.
I thought that a mermaid in a fishbowl was the perfect picture. Why? Because it's every man's dream to bottle a woman. Taking seriously the line "to have and to hold". This is my rendition of that line....with a twist. In my brain, we are always trying to get what we desire, but it's always just out of reach. As with this painting. The mermaid is there, the cat (who is my idea of Hoy) can't seem to get the mermaid. She is in peace, for she knows the cat won't go into the water to get her.
There you have it. So, Hoy....leave me alone already! This piece is not for sale. I promised Hoy a mermaid, so this is his. Do you have an idea for a piece? Send us an email. If we complete your idea, you will get to keep the original! Not a bad deal!
